The azo dye based chemosensor 2 displays extremely good sensitivity acid se
lectivity for Na+ over other physiologically important alkali and alkali ea
rth metal ions in the 0.3 1.0 x 10(-4) M concentration range as well as bei
ng pH independent above pH 3.9. This sensitivity coincides with the Na+ con
centration range found in blood. Thr sensor exhibits almost 110 nm hypsochr
omic shift in the absorption spectrum upon Na+ detection, with a strong col
our change from red to yellow in aqueous solution which is clearly visible
to the naked eye even at low concentrations. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd.
