Abstract
Changes of the surface state during the pretreatment of electroless nickel plating on magnesium alloys were studied using the weight loss method, scan ning election microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results showed that due to the formation of Mg(OH)(2) and MgF2 films on the surface, alkaline cleaning and activating made little attack on the su bstrate. Different etching solutions gave different etch rates and resultan t morphologies. The CrOOH containing film, which was formed during etching disappeared after activation.
