We present a diode-pumped laser system producing tunable picosecond pu
lses in the ultraviolet (UV) between 273 and 286 nm, with a maximum en
ergy of 0.14 mu J at 277nm. The source, operating at high repetition r
ate (10 kHz), is based on a diode-pumped Cr:LiSAF oscillator and on a
Ti:sapphire regenerative amplifier excited by a frequency-doubled Q-sw
itched diode-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser. The amplified pulses were frequency
-converted in the blue and in the UV by harmonic generation (doubling
and tripling) in two lithium triborate (LBO) crystals.
