The H-point standard addition method (HPSAM), based on spectrophotometric m
easurement, for simultaneous determination of A(III) and Pd(II) is describe
d. This method is based on the different rate of complex formation of Au(II
I) and Pd(II) with 5(p-dimethylaminobenzylidene)rhodanine (PDR) in the pres
ence of formate buffer and Brij-35. A study of the rate of complex formatio
n in various buffers was carried out and it was found that the HPSAM perfor
med well in formate buffer. The results showed that simultaneous determinat
ion of Pd and Au could be performed in the range of 0.17-1.8 and 1-3 mug ml
(-1) respectively. Selectivity was investigated and the main interferences
were eliminated. This method was successfully used for the determination of
the analytes in jewelry and synthetic samples. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B
