This paper advances an. argument about the need to improve the persuas
iveness of criminal justice research, through an examination of two qu
alitative studies on the police and defence lawyers. It is suggested t
hat research which addresses a range of moral and political perspectiv
es in the criminal justice system, and is more sensitive to the practi
cal content of day-to-day work, offers the possibility of more effecti
ve policy interventions, and a more productive relationship between pr
actitioners and academics.
