Sleep disturbances in infancy have been used as an example to demonstrate a
spectrum of relationship pathology. A recently proposed classification sch
eme that focuses on the child's age and nighttime interactions was presente
d. Two relationship disturbances, sleep-onset protodysomnia and night-wakin
g protodysomnia, have been defined, and a case that uses the nosology for d
iagnosis and treatment within the framework of parent-infant intervention i
s presented. Evaluation of the individual child's behavior in an objective
manner and assessment of the parent-child relationship build the foundation
for successful intervention with relationship disturbances using parent-ch
ild therapies.
