Military pre-trial custody

Readers may remember my article "Close Arrest for Miliary Defendants-Time f ar Change?"(1), which advocated a proper system of "bail" for military defe ndants. Root and branch reforms have now been enacted in the Armed Forces D iscipline Act 2000, which amends the Army and Air Force Acts 1955 and the A rmy Custody Rules 2000, and the RAF equivalent, and came into force on Octo ber 2, 2000. The Army and Air Force systems are effectively, identical. Thi s article does nor deal with the Royal Navy.
