M. Staudt et al., The operationalization, implementation, and effectiveness of the strengthsperspective: A review of empirical studies, J SOC SERV, 27(3), 2001, pp. 1-21
Although the strengths perspective is popular in social work, it is unclear
how it varies from traditional social work practice approaches. Studies of
the effectiveness of strengths-based interventions are reviewed to ascerta
in: (1) how the strengths perspective is operationalized and implemented, a
nd (2) the empirical support for its effectiveness. Few evaluations of stre
ngths-based treatment have been published. In those studies reporting posit
ive outcomes, it is not possible to determine whether outcomes are due to t
he strengths perspective or to the delivery of additional set-vices. Moreov
er, results indicate that the directives of the strengths perspective are n
ot adequately operationalized or measured. The strengths perspective is a v
alue stance, hut there is little support fur it as a distinct and uniquely
effective practice model.(C) 2001 by The Haworth Press, Inc. All rights res
