We report a case of motor neuron disease in which fasciculations and c
ramps progressed generally before the development of muscle wasting. A
fter involvement of the upper and lower motor neurons became clinicall
y manifest, widespread fasciculations and cramps persisted and accompa
nied pseudotetany. The present case suggests that spinal cord patholog
y of motor neuron disease can cause the abnormal excitability of the m
otor neurons, resulting in the development of generalized fasciculatio
ns and cramps. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
