Theory and measurements are presented to show that careful shaping of anten
na metalization can be used to design TEM ham antennas for ultra-wideband a
pplications involving high-fidelity impulsive electromagnetic fields. The e
ffect on the radiated pulse, spectral bandwidth, and transfer function is d
iscussed. A numerical time-domain formation is described to compute the imp
ulsive radiated far-field,waveform, and some experimentnl results are inclu
ded to indicate the usefulness of the technique. The ringing action of the
antenna is recognized as the crucial parameter constraining the usefulness
of the design. (C) 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
