Teacher ratings and peer nominations were compared to direct observation of
social behavior during free play, in 40 first grade elementary students, a
ges 6 to 8 years. No significant correlations were found between teacher ra
tings, peer nominations and direct observation of children's social interac
tion. The implications for interpretations of studies using sociometric mea
sures of social competence are discussed. The use of multiple measures of s
ocial competence is recommended.
