A FTIR study has been carried out on poly(N-methylpyrrole) chemically synth
esized in water and in acetonitrile with 10% water. Conductivity of the pol
ymer has been measured in pellets formed by pressing the powder obtained in
the synthesis. The FTIR of the pellet is very different from that of the p
owder showing that there has been a pressure-induced conformational change.
Evolution of the IR spectra with temperature shows that the polymer is sta
ble up to 403 K and from that temperature conformational changes followed b
y decomposition of the polymer take place. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. A
