Abstract
Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy have been used to observe th e variations of electronic structure along capped carbon nanotubes deposite d on freshly cleaved HOPG(0001) surface. The electronic structure has been derived from measured dependence of tunneling conductance dI/dV with applie d voltage. Evolution of dI/dV(V) along the nanotube suggests a change of co nductivity from semiconducting to metallic as the cap is approaching. The e xperiments are discussed in terms of existing theories of nanotubes and qua ntum chemistry calculations. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights rese rved.
