Stabilization of the layered crystal structure of lithium manganese oxide i
s important since this material represents an attractive low-cost alternati
ve to lithium cobalt oxide-typically used in lithium-ion batteries. Work to
wards this end is reviewed in this article as is the use of layered mangane
se oxide (see Figure) as a base for developing novel solid-solution cathode
materials with improved capacity, cycling stability, and safety.
