I. Pocsan et al., NEW ASPECTS REGARDING THE SYNTHESIS OF POLYVINYL-ALCOHOL .2. POLYVINYL ACETATE ALCOHOLYSIS IN MEDIA POSSESSING ENHANCED HYDROPHOBIC CHARACTER, Revue Roumaine de Chimie, 42(3), 1997, pp. 233-238
Base-catalyzed alcoholysis of polyvinyl acetate in methanol/melhyl ace
tate and methanol/n-butanol solvent mixtures was studied. The alcoholy
sis reaction was carried out in a Brabender-type micro-mixer. Quantita
tive data regarding the evolution of the polyvinyl alcohol synthesis p
rocess were obtained. The addition of 30 weight-% n-butanol determines
the decrease of the length of the homogeneous step of the reaction an
d the disappearance of the polyvinyl alcohol particle aggregation. The
phenomenon was ascribed to the enhancement of the hydrophobic charact
er of the reaction medium.
