A quasi thermodynamic interpretation is given for the non-specificity of su
rface excess entropies, as opposed to the specificity of surface excess ene
rgies. This difference is also observed for the molar entropies and energie
s of evaporation (Trouton's rule). Similarities and differences between the
processes of surface formation and evaporation are noted and discussed. Th
e analysis also covers the various excess amounts of matter in the interfac
ial layers. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
