Volcanic plugs in northern Ethiopia have silica-saturated, alkali-rich trac
hytic compositions. They are enriched in incompatible trace elements and sh
ow negative Sr, Ba, Eu and Ti anomalies. Their compositions are distinct fr
om those of felsic rocks within trap sequences, which are rhyolitic. The pl
ugs are not the feeders to the trap volcanism but instead may be related to
overlying shield volcanoes. (C) 2001 Academie des sciences / Editions scie
