A nine monopole antenna embedded in a dielectric cylinder mounted on a smal
l ground plane has been designed for IEEE 802.11 applications. Two simultan
eous beams are controlled electronically with a front-to-back ratio of 12 d
B and 13% bandwidth. The dielectric reduced the footprint by 85% and the an
tenna volume by 91% compared to an array with similar functionality in air.
