Abstract
The compound Sr3GdRhO6 has been synthesized and structurally character ized by Rietveld refinement of powder X-ray diffraction data. (space g roup R (3) over bar c; Z = 6; a = 9.7840(5) Angstrom; c = 11.4196(7) A ngstrom) This compound is isostructural with K4CdCl6. The structure co nsists of infinite one-dimensional chains of alternating face-shared R hO6 octahedra and GdO6 trigonal prisms. The strontium cations are loca ted in a distorted square antiprismatic environment. Magnetic suscepti bility data show that Sr3GdRhO6 obeys the Curie law with mu(eff) = 7.8 0 B.M., consistent with an oxidation state of + 3 for both rhodium and gadolinium.
