The free radical terpolymerization of three new systems with non-homopolyme
rizable monomers at 60 degreesC with AIBN as initiator is described: (1) 2-
chloroethyl vinylether (CEVE)/maleic anhydride (MSA)/methyl alpha -cyanocin
namate (CZME) in carbon tetrachloride: (2) Indene (IND)/N-ethylmaleimide (N
EMI)/CZME in carbon tetrachloride and (3) trans-anethole (ANE) /MSA/fumaron
itrile (FN) in tetrahydrofuran and 1,2-dichloroethane. All combinations can
be regarded as systems of one donor- and two acceptor-monomers, The terpol
yimerization results in alternating copolymers of acceptor- and donor-monom
er units. The ternary systems were investigated according to the known term
inal, penultimate and complex model. The equilibrium constants for the form
ation of charge-transfer complexes between acceptor- and donor-monomers in
the mentioned solvents as well as the reactivity ratios were determined. Th
e solvent effects on the equilibrium constant and on the composition of the
polymers in the system ANE/MSA/FN are investigated. (C) 2001 Elsevier Scie
