This paper summarizes results obtained in the references [1-4] where t
he convergence of Newton-type iterative methods for the solution of la
rge nonlinear systems; appearing from the incremental finite element (
FE) solution of problems of elasto-plasticity, have been studied. The
convergence of Newton-type methods is discussed for two variants of th
e incremental FE technique, which differ in the procedure of stress co
mputation within the load increments. This procedure uses the elasto-p
lastic constitutive relations or the return mapping of a trial stress
onto the yield surface. The presented results concern solution of simp
le elasto-plasticity problems, a model example will be von Mises plast
icity with isotropic strain hardening.
