M. Fourar et R. Lenormand, A new model for two-phase flows at high velocities through porous media and fractures, J PET SCI E, 30(2), 2001, pp. 121-127
A new model for describing two-phase flow at high velocities in porous medi
a and fractures is presented. It is based on the generalization of the sing
le-phase Forchheimer's equation by introducing a function F as a multiplier
factor of the superficial velocity during two-phase flow. This function is
assumed to depend on the saturation and fluid properties but not on the fl
ow regime (or Reynolds number). The function F can be derived from experime
nts performed at a given flow rate or from a theoretical model of the relat
ive permeability Kr in the viscous flow regime. The model is presented in t
erms of Kr for use in petroleum engineering and in terms of Lockhart and Ma
rtinelli parameters for use in chemical engineering. It is validated using
experimental results obtained at high flow rates of air and water in an art
ificial rough fracture. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
