Various preparative routes to 1-(dihydroxyalk-1-enyl)thymines, which are ac yclic, achiral nucleoside analogues, have been examined, and a successful s ynthesis of 1-[3-hydroxy-2-(hydroxymethyl)prop-1-enyl]thymine (1, B = T) ha s been devised.
