The effect of 1,3-bis (citraconimidomethyl)benzene (Perkalink(R) 900) has b
een investigated in silica containing off-the-road (OTR) and "green tire" c
ompounds. It has been demonstrated that by using Perkalink 900 it is possib
le to reduce the level of silane coupling agent, bis-(3-triethoxysilylpropy
l)tetrasulfide (TESPT) both in OTR as well as in "green tire" compounds pro
viding either equivalent or better performance characteristics such as impr
oved reversion resistance, lower heat build up and enhanced blow out times.
The polymer-filler and filler-filler interaction parameters virtually rema
in unchanged indicating no detrimental effect on reinforcement characterist
ics. The network studies has been done suggesting that Perkalink(R) 900 pro
vide better heat resistance because of the incorporation of thermally stabl
e as well as flexible C-C crosslinks during the reversion regime.
