The paper deals with different processes and methods allowing the determina
tion of formation constants of different metal-resin chelate complexes. It
discusses the methods based on ligand competition, metal competition, proto
n competition and on the pH dependent complex decomposing step. The applica
bility of the methods was proved doing experiments with potassium(I), coppe
r(Ir), nickel(II), cadmium(II), zinc(II), calcium(II), strontium(II) and ma
gnesium(II) ions and Ligandex-E (ethylenediamine triacetate) resin and with
the subsequent calculations. The obtained formation constant values are co
mpared and the advantages and disadvantages of the individual methods are d
iscussed. The well-known Bjerrum method was also used and its capability di
scussed.
