A new prototype for protection of the vertical port against fast electrons
escaping from thf plasma due to trapping in magnetic field ripple was insta
lled on Tore Supra in 1998. It is actively cooled and designed to withstand
a steady state high heat flux, up to 20 MW/m(2), due to fast electrons acc
elerated by the LH wave and lost in the magnetic field ripple. Results demo
nstrating the effectiveness of this prototype protection are presented. Imp
ortant information concerning modelling of fast electron losses, which will
play a crucial role in the final design, are also discussed.
