Resonant scattering of elliptically polarized soft x rays has been used to
study the magnetic properties of Fe in the trilayer structure Cu-85/Fe-x/Cu
-33 deposited on a Si(111) substrate. For x = 20 Angstrom, our room tempera
ture data can be reproduced by calculations which assume the magnetic prope
rties of bulk bcc alpha -Fe. For 2 less than or equal tox less than or equa
l to6, our experiment indicates that Fe has a very small magnetic moment in
the surface plane, which increases with thickness but remains below 0.2 mu
(B).
