Recently, superluminal velocities have been reported for the propagation of
localized microwave pulses. A critical interpretation based on the analysi
s of plane and spherical waves shows that the superluminal effects are caus
ed by interference phenomena. We demonstrate that Bessel beams or X-waves a
re unsuitable for superluminal signal transfer. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B
