Multilayer films of Fe(x)Pd(30 Angstrom) (6 less than or equal to x less th
an or equal to 30 Angstrom) are investigated with the help of the transvers
al Kerr effect (TKE) with incident light in the energy range 1.3-3.6 eV. Os
cillations of the TKE depending on the thickness of the iron layer are reve
aled. The off-diagonal element of the dielectric tensor epsilon (2)' is cal
culated using the measured values of the TKE for two incidence angles of li
ght and the optical constants of all samples. It is shown that the quantity
epsilon (2)' omega (2) (where omega is the frequency of incident light), w
hich is proportional to the interband density of states, also oscillates, a
nd its oscillations are similar in character to oscillations of the Kerr ef
fect. The observed oscillatory dependence of the TKE and of the interband d
ensity of states are related to the manifestation of quantum confinement ef
fects. (C) 2001 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica".
