Treatment of chiral alpha -benzyloxy- or alpha -propargyloxycarboxamide wit h tert-BuLi gave beta -hydroxycarboxamides (aldol derivatives) in high opti cal purity through the formation of alpha -lithiated ethers and the subsque nt 1,2-Wittig rearrangement.
