A. Yilmaz, The relationship between marital adjustment, parenting style and self-perception of children from different age groups, TURK PSIKOL, 16(47), 2001, pp. 1-24
The major purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships betwee
n marital adjustment, parent-child interaction, academic achievement and se
lf-perception of children among different age groups. A Sample of 534 subje
cts were selected among elementary school, high school and college students
. "Dyadic Adjustment Scale", "Parenting Style Scale", "Self-Perception Prof
ile For Children", "Self-Perception Profile For Adolescents" and "Self-Perc
eption Profile For College Students" were used for collecting data. The res
ults showed significant correlation between acceptance/involvement dimensio
n of parenting style and marital adjustment scores of their mothers in elem
entary school students. In college students, acceptance/involvement/autonom
y dimension of parenting style scores and marital adjustment scores of thei
r mothers were also significantly correlated. Hierarchical regression analy
sis indicated that marital adjustment significantly predicted the behaviour
al conduct and global self-worth subscales in high school students and athl
etic competence and parent relationships subscales in college students. It
was also found that acceptance/involvement, psychological autonomy and stri
ctness/supervision dimension of parenting style significantly predicted dif
ferent subscales of self- perception scale in all age groups. The findings
were discussed in the context of literature and suggestions were made for f
uture research.
