Insulin resistance is a metabolic state encountered in many physiological a
nd physiopathological conditions. Its pivotal effect on glucose and lipid m
etabolism is increasingly recognised. Over the last few years, numerous mol
ecular/intracellular pathways affected by this condition have been elucidat
ed. The author reviews some recent findings underlying several major metabo
lic abnormalities. An overview of current and future therapeutics is also p
rovided.
