Abstract
The observation of the production of antihydrogen atoms <(H)over bar ( 0)> = <(p)over bar e(+)>, the simplest atomic bound state of antimatte r, is presented.A method has been used by the PS210 collaboration at L EAR which assumes that the production of <(H)over bar (0)> is predomin antly mediated by the e(+)e(-) pair creation via the two-photon mechan ism in the antiproton-nucleus interaction. Neutral <(H)over bar (0)> a toms are indentified by a unique sequence of characteristics. In princ iple <(H)over bar (0)> is well suited for investigations of fundamenta l CPT violation studies under different forces, however, in our invest igations we concentrate on the production of this antimatter object, s ince so far it had not been observed. The production of eleven antihyd rogen atoms is reported including possibly 2 +/- 1 background signals, the observed yield agrees with theoretical predictions.
