The ability to synthesize fellutanines (earlier discovered in Penicill
ium fellutanum cultures) and other tryptophan-containing alkaloids was
shown in penicillia of the series Canescentia (P. canescens, P. melin
ii, P. janzcewskii) and Fellutana (P. waksmanii and P. jensenii), belo
nging to the section Divaricatum of the subgenus Furcatum of the genus
Penicillium. Out of 26 strains studied in this work, four (P. canesce
ns VKM F-1148, VKM F-1287, and VKM F-3108 and P. waksmanii VKM F-1027)
produced fellutanine A or isofellutanine B metabolites typical of P.
fellutanum, and seven strains (P. canescens VKM F-240, P. melinii VKM
F-311, P. janzcewskii VKM F-2489, P. Jensenii VKM F-292 and VKM F-293,
and P. waksmanii VKM F-682 and VKM F-1022) synthesized other tryptoph
an-containing alkaloids-isorugulosuvine, meleagrin, glandicolin B, roq
uefortine, 3,12-dihydroroquefortine, 16-N-ethylroquefortine, and ene)-
6-(1H-indole-3-yl-methyl)-2,5-piperazinediol.
