The composites of tomorrow will need to be developed in advanced engineerin
g environments. This transformation to computer-based materials design requ
ires a transformation of traditional engineering education programs. Studen
ts need training in systems design, simulation and visualization technologi
es, teamwork, and communication to function effectively in distributed, div
erse, collaborative work environments. The programs being coordinated and i
mplemented by CAEFF are designed to meet these challenges and constitute a
paradigm shift in engineering education. (C) 2001 published by Elsevier Sci
