Abstract
Recent studies have highlighted the importance of monolayer and bilayer cur vature for the budding and fission of biological membranes. Other lines of research, addressing the structure of planar biological membranes, have rev ealed the existence of cholesterol-based membrane microdomains. Here, we co mment on the Significance of microdomains for curved membranes, with specia l emphasis on budding and fission.
