In this paper, a new method for the construction of bridge piers using prec
ast prestressed concrete (PPC) panels as formwork is proposed in order to i
ncrease the efficiency of construction. Scaled down experiments were perfor
med to check the feasibility of the proposed method. Experiments were carri
ed out on six different reinforced concrete column specimens. These experim
ents were performed to check whether the PPC panels acted as an integral pa
rt of the structure due to good bonding between panels and core concrete. L
oad-displacement behavior, crack pattern and other experimental data were a
nalyzed and the experimental results compared with numerical simulations to
check the effectiveness of the construction method. It was interesting to
observe that the use of panels did not create any weakness in the structura
l behavior of the specimen and can be used effectively for the construction
of bridge piers. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
