Abstract
The burrowing activity of annelids controls the spatial pattern and rapid f ormation of large desiccation cracks in the river flood-derived mud cover i n recently inundated farmland areas in northwestern Anatolia, Turkey. The p henomenon is confirmed by laboratory experiments imitating the natural floo dplain conditions.
