Difficult economic times have caused libraries in the UK to eliminate posit
ions for many music librarians, leaving the task of providing music service
in addition to their regular duties. Many of them know little or nothing o
f music and are understandably terrified of this unfamiliar subject. The au
thors have designed and taught a successful crash course, presented as a on
e day workshop, to introduce non-specialists to the basic nomenclature, for
mats, organization, reference sources, and problems of music in a library s
etting.
