Abstract
Molar conductances of some 1 ' :1 alkali metal and tetraalkylammonium salts and silver nitrate have been measured in acetic acid + water mixtures cont aining 0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 90 wt% acetic acid at 25(0) C. The conductance data have been analysed by Shedlovsky method setting ion-size parameter eq ual to Bjerrum critical distance suggested by Justice to calculate Ao and K A. Transference numbers of NO3. ion in AgNO3 have also been measured in wat er and acetic acid + water mixtures containing 20, 40, 60, 80 and 90 wt % a cetic acid by modified Hittorf's method and e.m.f method. The limiting tran sference numbers t(NO3)(0)(-), have been combined with Ao values of AgNO3 t o obtain limiting ionic conductances, lambda (0)(+)(Ag) and lambda (0)(-)(N O3) and these values have been further used to calculate limiting ionic mol ar conductances of all other ions using Kohlrausch law. These studies sugge st the solvation pattern in acetic acid + water mixtures as : Li+ > Na+ > A g+ > K+ > NH4+ and BPh4. > CH3COO. > Cl-. > Br- > NO3-.
