A systematic investigation of the isothermal section at 750 degreesC of the
U-Fe-Sn ternary system was done by means of scanning electron microprobe a
nalysis and X-ray powder diffraction. The phase diagram at this temperature
is characterized by the formation of two ternary compounds and two signifi
cantly broad solid solution ranges. The compounds are U2Fe2Sn, with U3Si2-t
ype structure (space group P4/mbm, a = 7.302(1)Angstrom, c = 3.447(1) Angst
rom), and UFe5Sn, with CeCu5Au-type structure (space group Pnma, a = 8.091(
3) Angstrom, b = 4.873(2) Angstrom, c = 10.469(4) Angstrom. The two solid s
olutions are formed from the UFe2 and FeSn binary compounds. (C) 2001 Elsev
