Energy transfer from Yb3+ to Er3+ in LiNbO3 in dependence with an external
applied magnetic field is studied. As a result, the probability of the ener
gy transfer, and therefore the up-converted luminescence of Er3+ is either
enhanced or inhibited, depending on the intensity of the magnetic field. Th
is effect is explained in terms of the matching between the energy level of
the two species, related to the effective Lande factor of each ion. (C) 20
