An X-ray diffraction study of the palladium beta -pinenyl complex [Pd(eta (
3)-beta -C10H15)(PPh3)Cl] was conducted. The crystals of the complex are mo
noclinic: a = 10.131(3) Angstrom, b = 24.431(4) Angstrom, c = 10.766(4) Ang
strom; beta = 109.31(3)degrees; V = 2514.8(9) Angstrom (3); Z = 4; space gr
oup P2(1). The unit cell contains two crystallographically independent mole
cules with nearly the same structures and similar geometric parameters. In
both molecules, the Pd atom is bonded to the Cl atom (av. Pd-Cl, 2.289(7) A
ngstrom), the P atom (av. Pd-P, 2.367(6) Angstrom). and the beta -pinenyl l
igand. This ligand is coordinated with palladium through the allyl fragment
in the eta (3) mode (Pd-C, 2.12(2)-2.32(2) Angstrom). The absolute configu
ration of both molecules is the same: [SP-4-A-(1R,2S,3S,5R)].
