The complex [CuL(H2O)] (1) (L is a tetradentate ligand, the product of the
condensation of 2-formylphenoxyacetic acid with glycine) was obtained by te
mplate synthesis. The compound was synthesized by reacting equimolar amount
s of formylphenoxyacetic acid and glycine in a water-methanol medium with c
opper ions as a matrix. Crystals of complex I are monoclinic, space group P
2(1)/n, a = 9.106(2) Angstrom, b = 10.063(2) Angstrom, c = 12.975(3) Angstr
om, beta = 104.72(3)degrees, R = 0.0405. In compound I, copper atoms have a
square-pyramidal coordination. The tetradentate ligand is located in the e
quatorial plane. The ligand is coordinated through the oxygen atoms of two
carboxy groups (Cu-O(3), 1.937(2) Angstrom; Cu-O(4), 1.903(2) Angstrom), th
e ether oxygen atom (Cu-O(1), 2.017(2) Angstrom), and the nitrogen atom of
the azomethine group (Cu-N, 1.912(2) Angstrom). The copper atom is 0.176 An
gstrom out of the basis plane toward the coordinated water molecule (Cu-O(1
w), 2.322(3) Angstrom). An additional contact Cu-O(COO) is in traits positi
on to the atom O(1w) at a distance of 3.035 Angstrom. According to the EPR
data, the central atom is in the ground state (S = 1/2) with the parameters
of the g tensor: g(z) = 2.273 +/- 0.006 and g(x,y) = 2.085 +/- 0.004.
