A new procedure was developed for the synthesis of 8-alkoxycarbonylangeliei
ns by base-catalyzed cyclization of ortho-acyl(hydroxy)coumarins with haloa
cetic acid esters. The procedure was successfully applied to prepare a seri
es of new 8-alkoxycarbonyl- and 8-acylangelicins.
