The monotypic genus Achyrothalamus has been conventionally distinguished fr
om Erythrocephalum principally by the absence of a pappus and the presence
of phyllaries with entire margins. However, a critical re-examination of 83
morphological and anatomical characters, and a detailed study of the polle
n of the two genera, suggest that recognition of Achyrothalamus as a distin
ct genus is unjustified. We thus propose Achyrothalamus as a synonym of Ery
throcephalum with the new combination E. marginatum.
