Results of break junction experiments are presented, measuring the res
istance as a function of inter-electrode spacing in vacuum tunnel junc
tions of Sb at a temperature of 1.3 K, A pronounced deviation from exp
onential tunneling is observed, showing a maximum in the resistance at
a spacing of similar to 1 Angstrom. A tentative explanation of the an
omalous barrier-width dependence of the current in terms of Sb surface
states is given. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
