A new technique for two-dimensional rotating-frame nuclear-quadrupole-
resonance imaging in powder or polycrystalline samples is reported. Th
e bidimensional encoding procedure is based on the irradiation of the
object by a sequence of pulsed orthogonal radiofrequency linear gradie
nts. The spatial-density function, together with the spectroscopic inf
ormation, is directly recorded in Cartesian coordinates. Several varia
nts of the encoding procedure are discussed, and experimental results
demonstrating the viability of the technique are given. (C) 1997 Acade
