The O-18-labelled substrate Ph2P(O)NHOP(O-18)Ph-2 rearranges with base
(KOBut) to give Ph(PhNH)P(O)OP(O-18)Ph-2 but not Ph(PhNH)P(O)(OP)-O-1
8(O)Ph-2, in accord with a concerted mechanism rather than one involvi
ng a metaphosphonimidate intermediate; Ph(PhNH)P(O-18)OP(O)Ph-2 is als
o formed, but only because the substrate rapidly equilibrates with Ph2
P(O-18)NHOP(O)Ph-2 prior to rearrangement.
