Abstract
Michael additions of alpha-nitroesters with enones and alpha,beta-unsa turated aldehydes result in quantitative conversions to the correspond ing 1,4-adducts by performing the reactions in water in the presence o f ytterbium triflate as water-tolerant Lewis acid.
